Vegetative meditation is a group of work on paper using acrylic paint, block printing and various brush tools.
The use of printing a carved block throughout this body of work assists in creating a unified body of work. The leaf-like depiction in the block print gives a naturalist beginning in which I plunge into abstraction. The block printing creates a web on which to pull and push lines, shapes, colours and surface reflections. I’ve always been interested in the interstices, here that becomes a main focus.
The work is built in sets of four, where I have focussed on formal investigations of various constructs such colour contrasts, value differentiation, rhythm of figure/ ground relationships and a variety of mark making.
As I’ve developed this series with its shallow depth of field and repetitive pattern, I’ve seen references and relationships to fabric colour swatches, the wallpaper of the Arts and Craft movement, Indonesian batik and Persian rugs.
